How Many Watts Does a Refrigerator Need?

It needs more than one kind of “watts,” and the useful number is the one on your model, not a universal figure from a website. This page separates the terms so the calculator is harder to misuse.

Watts and watt-hours

Watts are a rate: how fast energy is being used right now. Watt-hours are an amount: rate times time. A 60 W load for 10 hours is 600 Wh. A portable power station’s capacity is an amount (Wh). Its continuous rating is a rate (W). You can run out of either one first.

Three different refrigerator numbers

Average watts are what the appliance uses over hours, including the long stretches when the compressor is off. Annual kWh divided by 8,760 hours is an average. A plug meter left on for a day is an average. Average watts are the right input for a runtime estimate. They do not establish continuous running power.

Running watts are the draw while the compressor is actually on. They are higher than the average. Multiply by a duty-cycle fraction to estimate the average. The fraction moves with room temperature, door openings, and how full the cabinet is.

Startup watts are the brief extra draw when the compressor starts. They can be several times the running watts for a fraction of a second. A nameplate may list amps. This site does not convert amps into a promised watt figure, because voltage and power factor change the result. If you do not have a known startup wattage, say so by leaving the calculator field blank. Startup compatibility is not confirmed.

How published battery ratings get compared

Continuous watts are compared with your startup figure only when you entered one. If your figure is above the continuous rating and within the published surge, the calculator says exactly that and still refuses to confirm a start. Surge is a short published peak, not a permission slip. If your figure is above the published surge, watt-hours do not repair it.

EcoFlow pages in this catalog also mention X-Boost. That mode is not treated as the continuous rating and not treated as proof a refrigerator will start. The comparison pages record the numbers that were actually checked.

What this page will not do

It will not tell you how to backfeed a wall outlet, how to land a cord in a panel, or how to bond a generator. Connecting a power station to house wiring is outside this site. Follow both manuals, keep the equipment dry and ventilated, and do not run a fuel generator indoors. A battery power station is not a fuel generator, and the fuel-generator rule is still the one people get hurt ignoring.

Take the numbers you do have to the calculator. If you only have the yellow label, start with the EnergyGuide explanation.

Common questions

How many watts does a refrigerator need?

There is no single number. Average watts, running watts, and startup watts are different, and they vary by model.

Can annual kilowatt-hours tell me the startup watts?

No. Annual energy and measured average power do not establish continuous running power or startup power.
